Few researchers have done more to preserve and document the history of Spanish colonial New Mexico than José Antonio Esquibel. A respected genealogical researcher, historian, and author, Esquibel has spent decades researching the families who shaped early New Mexico. In 2009, his contributions were recognized by King Juan Carlos II of Spain, who knighted him and inducted him into the Order of Isabel la Católica.
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, Esquibel will present "Encomendero Families" during the Genealogical Society of Hispanic America–Southern California's (GSHA-SC) hybrid general meeting. Attend in person at the Southern California Genealogical Society Library, 417 Irving Drive, Burbank, California, or join online via Zoom.

Meet the Presenter
José Antonio Esquibel is the co-author, with John B. Colligan, of The Spanish Recolonization of New Mexico: An Account of the Families Recruited at Mexico City in 1693 (1999), and with Christine and Douglas Preston of The Royal Road: El Camino Real from Mexico City to Santa Fe (1998).
In 2009, he was knighted by King Juan Carlos II of Spain and inducted into the Order of Isabel la Católica with the rank of Cruz de Oficial in recognition of his dedication to preserving the history of Spain and Spanish heritage in New Mexico.
Esquibel has contributed historical essays to numerous anthologies on New Mexico history and served as a research consultant for the El Camino Real Project and the Vargas Project, including To the Royal Crown Restored: The Journals of Don Diego de Vargas, New Mexico, 1692–1694. He is also the author of Thirty-eight Adobe Houses: The Villa de Santa Fe in the Seventeenth Century, published in the anthology All Trails Lead to Santa Fe, commemorating 400 years of Santa Fe history.
He continues to write and research Spanish colonial genealogy, with current work focusing on the founding families of the Villa de Santa Fe.
