Whether you're just getting started with genealogy software or have years of experience, there's always something new to discover! Join fellow genealogists to explore popular family history programs, exchange ideas, share tips and techniques, and learn how to get more from the tools you use.

Curious about a particular program? Want to organize your family tree, improve your research documentation, incorporate photographs and historical records, or discover features you may have overlooked? Our interest groups offer an opportunity to learn from others, ask questions, troubleshoot challenges, and share knowledge. New users are always welcome, and all experience levels are encouraged to participate!

Choosing the Right Genealogy Software

With so many genealogy programs available, finding the right one depends on your research needs, working style, and personal preferences. Many offer free trials or introductory versions, so you can explore features before committing.

Here are some things to consider when comparing programs:

  • Research goals: Does the software support the way you organize, document, and explore your family history?

  • Ease of use: Is the interface intuitive? Can you easily navigate family trees, profiles, and research tools?

  • Source documentation: Does it offer flexible options for recording sources, citations, notes, and evidence?

  • Photos and media: Can you incorporate photographs, documents, audio, videos, and other family history materials?

  • Online access and syncing: Can you access your research across multiple devices or synchronize information with online family trees?

  • Sharing and collaboration: Can you share your research with relatives or collaborate with other researchers?

  • Data ownership and portability: Can you export your family tree and research in standard formats, such as GEDCOM, if you decide to switch programs?

  • Cost and support: What are the purchase or subscription costs, and what training, updates, and customer support are available?

The best software supports your research, fits your needs, and helps you preserve and share your family's story.
