About the Event
The Southern California Genealogical Society's Italian Interest Group will host Professor Laura E. Roberto of Berkeley City College on Saturday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to noon PT. Professor Roberto will discuss "Conflicting Identities in the United States During World War II." The meeting and presentation will be held online.
About the Presentation
Professor Ruberto will discuss her ongoing research regarding how Italians in the United States were treated during World War II. She will review some of the ways surveillance, restrictions, and imprisonment affected three distinct groups of people on U.S. soil in the years leading up to and during World War II: Italian resident “enemy aliens,” Italian non-resident “enemy aliens,” and Italian POWs. The different ways these groups were treated were in part influenced by politics, and in part influenced by American xenophobia and racism, the latter point made especially clear by a comparison with the Japanese American experience.
