About the Event

Don't miss the first of SCGS's 2025 Webinar Series, scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. PST. Dede Huang presents "Exclusion's Hidden Impact: Chinese "FAN" Research for Non-Chinese."

About the Webinar

From 1882 to 1943, harsh anti-Chinese legislation kept the number of Chinese in the US at roughly 100,000 and restricted the jobs they could pursue. Nevertheless, ethnic Chinese migrants found roles in America's rapidly changing society that leveraged their interactions and impact far beyond what this scenario would suggest.

FANs: Friends, Associates, and Neighbors

Did your family interact with America's Chinese residents? Might some of them have been what genealogist Elizabeth Shown Mills has dubbed "Friends, Associates & Neighbors" (FANs)? How might these Chinese FANs have enriched, improved, or otherwise shaped the lives of your forbears? If you're curious about these possibilities or want to understand this time period better, join us! Looking well beyond railroads…
