About the Event
The next regularly scheduled SCGS Italian Interest Group meeting will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. PST. It will be conducted online using Zoom.
On March 28, the Italian Council of Ministers amended eligibility rules for Italian citizenship by descent (jus sanguinis). By the end of May, these amended rules could become law, restricting eligibility for citizenship by descent only to individuals with a parent or grandparent from Italy. For example, the great-grandchild of an immigrant would no longer be eligible. We will discuss the amendment, its consequences, and more.
Many of you are already familiar with immigration (arrival) records and ship manifest images made available on websites such as Ancestry and The Statue of Liberty—Ellis Island Foundation. However, together, we will explore a lesser-known website database cataloging the emigration (outbound) records of thousands of Italians from Italy’s major ports during the 19th and 20th centuries.
