About the Event

Are you trying to translate or decipher German script in your ancestors' documents? Guest speaker Milan Pohontsch will present "Old German Script Writing: Capital Letters & Umlauts" at SCGS's April German Interest Group Meeting, which will be in hybrid format.

Milan Pohontsch is a full-time professional genealogist. As a native of Germany, he has excellent language and communication skills for conducting research in that part of Europe. While a young man, he discovered and fell in love with what is now his vocation — genealogy. Later, he became head of a genealogical research center in Germany. Milan also served as an expert for the International Reference Counter in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and has cataloged microfilms in the LDS Church Office Building.

Milan teaches old German handwriting to all who wish to learn it. He has written genealogical articles in three languages, teaches regularly at genealogical conferences, and co-authored a town lineage book for the area of Lusatia, Germany. While his specialty is German research, he is also an expert in some East European countries. Milan makes regular research trips to German and some East European archives. He is fluent in some Eastern European languages (and has at least a basic understanding of a few additional languages). He can translate documents from several languages, as well as Latin.

The German Interest Group aims to provide a wide range of resources inside and outside the SCGS Library to help trace German families. The group meets at the SCGS Library every third Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. They often have a speaker on German research, and they offer assistance with your German research problems. New members and guests are always welcome. Bring your family information (pedigree charts and family group sheets with as much information as possible). The group members will be better able to assist you in locating the information you need to find your German ancestors.
