Genealogy Jamboree Volunteers Needed!

Jamboree is more fun when you set aside a couple of hours to help. You know you want to be there, so why not be a part of the action! Volunteer now and assure yourself that you will be there for part of the day or for the whole weekend.   No experience is necessary; we’ll train you for the job.  Some jobs take brains, some take brawn, and others just take a willing smile, an interest in people and a volunteer’s heart.

Jane Van Tour will be overseeing the volunteer army and will be getting in touch with volunteers as Jamboree draws near. Send an email to Jane at jvantour4@gmail.com to let her know the times, dates and tasks that interest you. For those of you who have volunteered before there have been some changes in our volunteer needs. We have eliminated the Speaker Introduction and added Concierge and Traffic flow volunteers.

Volunteers who work at least four (4) hours on site at Jamboree will receive a $5 food coupon as a token of appreciation.  Volunteers can earn one coupon per day.

We need:

Saturday, June 5 - Registration Bag Stuffers: Come to the SCGS Library, 417 Irving Drive in Burbank, on Saturday June 5, at 10am for the annual assembly chaos of stuffing the registration bags and name tags. It’s a great way to get to meet other volunteers and to get a sneak peek at Jamboree. It kicks off Jamboree Week in a rousing, fun, free-pizza-for-all, kind of way.

Thursday, June 9 - Thursday Volunteers: We will need Room Monitors, Sign in Table for the Thursday Writer’s Conference and Kid’s Camp. Door Staff. Pre-registration volunteers will be needed for Thursday evening early pre-registration check-in. Will also need venue monitors for the Convention Center exhibitor move-in.

Thursday June 9 and Friday June 10 - Concierge - Assist vendors with load in/out if able or vendor requested. Monitor vendor vehicles/items during load in/out

Friday, June 10 - Genealogy World Round Table Discussions:  Moderate table discussions. You will do not have to be an expert and you don't have to make a "presentation." You job will just be to make sure that the conversation keeps moving. Contact SCGSJamboree@gmail.com and put "Genealogy World" in the subject line if you are interested in helping out. If you have a particular ethnicity, geography, or topic that you would like to faciltate, please add that too..

Throughout the Jamboree Weekend, June 10-12, we need:

Volunteers are needed for Thursday evening June 9 as well as daily June 10-11.

Sign-in Table: Sign-in and distribute any hand outs to participants in the JamboFREE events on Friday morning. There will be a combination of those who have pre-registered and walk-in’s.

Hospitality: Greet people and direct them to the appropriate registration line. Distribute and collect registration forms from walk-in registrants waiting in line. Give directions to lecture rooms, restrooms, etc. Collect evaluations. Hospitality volunteers will also assist with traffic control in the Convention Center using the rope barriers. In the very large seminar rooms, 1-2 hospitality volunteers will assist the Room Monitors by locating and directing participants to empty seats.

Room Monitors: Badge checks/take tickets, distribute/collect evaluation forms, estimate attendance at each session, do room maintenance (straighten chairs, etc). Notify Jamboree Venue Manager immediately of any problematic issues such as unsafe crowding, audio-visual, or speaker needs. (We need at least one room monitor for each session and multiple monitors for large sessions. Volunteering as a monitor is a great way to be assured of a seat at even the most popular session. Check the lecture schedule and pick the two or three sessions that are the most important for you to attend. Volunteer for those sessions, and we will do our best to assign you to the lecture of your choice.)

Tech Zone: Set up/maintain equipment, assist participants with use of databases, keep time used by participants, troubleshoot access. Assure security of equipment. You do not need to be a geek or techie to volunteer for the Tech Zone. Anyone with a knowledge of the major genealogy databases will be welcomed.
