FAMILY TREE DNA PROJECT

The Land Surname DNA Project is open to all males with the surname Land. The male "Y" chromosome is passed from father to son unchanged (except for a mutation about once every 500 generations). The test of your "Y" chromosome DNA will provide you with a genetic fingerprint. This genetic fingerprint will consist of a series of 12, 25 or 37 numbers depending upon the size of the test you choose. By comparing your genetic fingerprint to others with the surname Land you will be able to determine if you are related.

Females born with the Land surname and those males with maternal Land lines will be able to accomplish this by enlisting the cooperation of their male Land relatives

The Land Surname DNA Project has as its objectives:

  • To establish "Benchmarks" for our oldest ancestors against which others will be able to test relationships,
  • To identify others who are related,
  • To prove or disprove theories regarding your family history or your ancestry,
  • To solve brick walls you have run into in your research,
  • To provide a means for possibly determining where (location) you should research next, and
  • To validate your existing research.

Our Land project will begin with the 25-marker Y-DNA test offered by Family Tree DNA. This will be our standard. It will intially provide more in-depth information on relationships. It will also eliminate the necessity for the upgrade from the 12-marker test which many participants in other projects have elected to do.

However, if any of you wish to begin with the 12 or 37-marker test for any reason you may do so.

Because we are a registered Surname project at Family Tree DNA we will receive special project pricing discounts.

The Project pricing is:

12-marker Y-DNA test $ 99 plus $2 postage
To later upgrade to the 25-marker test from the 12 marker test an additional $ 90
To later upgrade to the 37-marker test from the 12-marker test an additional $149

25-marker Y-DNA test $169 plus $2 postage

To later upgrade to the 37-marker test, an additional $ 59

37-marker Y-DNA test $229 plus $2 postage

This price includes archival storage of your DNA for 25 years.

I know I am a descendant of John S. Land and Mary Ann (unknown) who resided in St. Clair County, Michigan in 1850. My personal objective for this project is to determine if my GGGF John Land, born about 1799-1801 in PA is the same John Land born about 1799-1801, PA, the son of John Land and Lillie Skinner. The latter John Land was the son of Robert Land the Loyalist who fled from PA to Ontario about 1778.

I am currently soliciting participation from any male Land descendants of Robert Land and Phoebe Scott. They had four male children: John 1758-1738, Abel 1760, Robert 1772 and Ephraim 1774, all born in PA. John stayed in PA and married Lillie Skinner. The other three boys settled in Ontario, Canada. There are numerous male descendants. Please e-mail me if you are a descendant and willing to take the test.

My name is Doug Miller. I live in Santa Clarita, CA. I will be the Land DNA Project group administrator.

Please address all comments, suggestions and inquiries to me at Doug Miller.

I am soliciting an alternate group administrator from the participants. This is someone who would be willing to take over the management of the project if I am not able to continue for any reason. Please let me know if you are willing to perform this important function.
