2006 GENEii Family History Writers Contest Winners

By Beth Maltbie Uyehara, Contest Coordinator
GENEii Family History Writing Contest

The winners of the 2006 GENEii Family History Writing Contest have been announced. The contest has been sponsored annually by the Southern California Genealogical Society for the past seven years. There were some changes this year: a modest entrance fee was instituted, and, for the first time, both published and unpublished works were judged together in two categories: short works (fewer than 1,000 words) and longer works (1,001 to 2,000 words).

The caliber of the entries, as always, was top notch, and the scores were high throughout. SCGS member and The Searcher contributor Bonnie Copeland took top prize in Category 1, and second prize in Category 2. Her scoring in the first category marks the first time any writer has received the maximum number of points from both judges. Congratulations, Bonnie! Other double winners in the 2006 contest are Leslie Albrecht Huber, Anne Clarke and Willie Walker. Winners from previous contests who received honors this year are Emily Pritchard Cary,  Diane Altona, Anne Clarke, and Phyllis Harris.

Finally, many thanks go to our two judges for their hard work on the 2006 contest: Libby Atwater, a Ventura-based professional writer and editor (and previous GENEii prize-winner), and Gail Said Johnson, the editor of the excellent journal of the British Isles Family History Society-USA.

Congratulations to all the finalists, honorable mentions and prize winners—and thanks to all who submitted entries. The purpose of the contest is to encourage the writing of family history. If we don’t record what we know in writing, the stories of our families' lives will be lost forever ... so get your keyboards running. The eighth contest will be upon us sooner than you think!
