January Meeting

Saturday, January 13, 2007
12:00 noon - lunch
1:00 p.m. - presentation

At the January Lunch and Learn presentation Saturday, January 13, 2007, Dennis McCarger will give a talk on the use of genealogical numbering systems.

If you're new to genealogy, this presentation will help get you off on the right foot. For those who have been working for some time, start the new year off by getting yourself organized. January's Lunch and Learn presentation will explain and demonstrate the various numbering systems in general use, such as Ahnentafel, Register, Record, Henry, Modified Henry, D'Aboville, deVilliers, and variations, several systems available online for a fee, as well as the one system seldom talked about, Alpha Numbering. Each of these has advantages and disadvantages, and each works better in some applications, than others. Handouts will be distributed.

Dennis was born in Nebraska and graduated from high school in Colorado. He was a music major in college before enlisting in the Navy. He has earned two MA degrees, one in history and one in library science. He has taught history, music, Spanish, genealogy, and economics. He has been interested in genealogy since he was nineteen. Dennis has been an archivist, a miner, truck driver, Port of Entry officer, and driver instructor, among other occupations. He was employed by the California Department of Corrections for eleven years and is now the reference librarian at the L. A. County Library in Baldwin Park. Dennis is a member of SCGS and was recently elected to serve on the SCGS Board of Directors.

Bring a brownbag lunch and join us for an informal session at noon, followed by Dennis's presentation at 1pm. The SCGS Library will be open for research following the lecture.
