Jamboree Reviews from the GenBloggers

George G. Morgan, in an article written for Dick Eastman's newsletter http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2008/07/logging-your-fa.html

"Last weekend I attended one of the best conferences in the United States. It was the Southern California Genealogical Society's annual Jamboree in Burbank, California. The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well there, and the society members made every one of the attendees feel welcome and appreciated. There was literally something for everyone in every lecture time period. The vendor exhibit hall had all manner of software, books, maps, magazines, Internet databases and social networks, and so much more.

The work on the part of the SCGS members made everything seem to flow very well indeed. I heartily recommend this conference to anyone who can get there next year..."

Okay it's not exactly a review but it's Megan's inside story of the infamous "My mic just slid into my pants!" incident. Truly one of the memorable moments of Jamboree. I am in awe of Megan's unflappability.

"I loved it. I think all the other attendees enjoyed themselves as well. "

"The format of the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree is a winner"

"I hope to go back next year and "do it again."

"The 2009 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree has already been scheduled for June 12 through 14 at the same location. After all, the construction should be completed long before then! I hope to be there. Will you?"

"...an extremely well-run conference"

"Everyone has a smile on his or her face and each was genuinely concerned with making the event an excellent experience for attendees, speakers and vendors."

Craig Manson

"Jamboree: Was It Worth It?...In my calculus, I think the benefits outweighed the costs. It was worth it! "

"And here is one of the nits I have to pick about the conference. The lunch lines were unreasonably long and there were far too few tables at which to sit."

Write Your Family Names on Our Virtual Surname Wall

You are invited to add your family surnames to the Southern California Genealogical Society's Virtual Surname Wall.   Use this valuable service to help connect with online cousins everywhere.

There is no charge for this service, and the offer is open to the public. We encourage you to forward this invitation to your cousins, genealogy-related email lists, society members, your genealogy acquaintences, or other family historians.

Although this project is being sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society, we welcome family information from any geographic area, not just California. You may submit up to 10 surnames. We plan to allow for more surnames to be added and will let you know when we are able to accept more names.

Participants will be asked for the following information. You may wish to have your family group sheets, pedigree charts, or genealogy database available for reference.

1. Your family surnames (including spelling variations).
2. The geographic area in which they lived, or the migration path.
3. The associated period of time.

Your participation in the Virtual Surname Wall project is completely voluntary. Surname Wall information will be maintained by SCGS and may be included in printed or a searchable free online database that would be accessible on the SCGS website at www.scgsgenealogy.com. Your participation in the project is your authorization to include your surname information in any printed or searchable online databases that may be developed.

Of course, we have instituted steps to protect your privacy. Your contact information will not be displayed, either in print or online. You will have the option of asking SCGS to serve as intermediary, or authorizing SCGS to release your contact information should we receive an inquiry regarding a possible family connection.

Click here to add your names to our Virtual Surname Wall.

Ancestors Gallery Memorials

What is the Ancestors Gallery?

The Ancestors Gallery is a special feature that will be included on the SCGS Website and in the 2007 Genealogy Jamboree syllabus. The program has been developed to give genealogists and family historians a new outlet to honor ancestors and relatives. The traditional genealogy query of details about the individual will be accompanied by a vintage photograph of your family member to create a memorial that will appear online and in the Jamboree Syllabus. Fees for Ancestors Gallery listings are nominal and are based on the size of the listing and the number of photographs. To read more about the program, see here.

Ralphs Club Contribution Program - Sign up for the 2008 Program Year

Thanks to all of the SCGS members and friends who joined the Ralphs Community Contribution Program in support of the Southern California Genealogical Society. Over the past year, SCGS has received about $1500 through this program.

As most of you probably know, Ralphs recently launched it's new "Ralphs Rewards" program. All customers will be completing a new application and receiving a new card the next time they go shopping at Ralphs.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT RALPHS COMMUNITY REWARDS?

As long as your members LINK their previously enrolled Ralphs Club Card with their new Ralphs Rewards Card, their participation with your organization will continue without change. As a confirmation point, everyone will still see the organization contribution note at the bottom of their receipt.

If they did not link their 2 cards together when they received their new Rewards Card, they must go online to enroll their new Ralphs Rewards Card with your organization.

In order to make it a bit easier for those signing up for the Ralph's Community Contribution and have your contribution pointing towards SCGS:

  1. Go to http://www.ralphs.com/ccprogram.htm
  2. You'll see two boxes - one "Organization" and one "Participant"
  3. Click on the "Sign Up" button in the "Participant" box.
  4. Certify that you are the Ralphs cardholder.
  5. Fill in the blanks on the Participants Enrollment Form. For the NPO number, enter 82966

If you do not have Internet access, you can add your name to the sign-up list located at the Librarian's desk, or call the library during office hours and the librarians will take your information over the phone.

Participation in the Ralphs Club Contribution program is not limited to SCGS members. Please pass this message along to your family members and friends.

The video segments will be available for a limited time on their website www.KTLA.com/dna. This link works best with high speed DSL or cable internet connections.
