After months of planning, Jamboree is here. The 2010 event will be held June 11-13, 2010, at the Los Angeles Burbank Marriott Hotel. JAMBOREE PINK SHEETS NOW AVAILABLE You will need legal-sized paper to print it out The 2010 Jamboree follows the longstanding tradition of delivering the perfect mix of lecture sessions, exhibitors, networking and social activities. This year's Jamboree offers nearly 130 quality classes conducted by the most knowledgeable and experienced genealogy speakers from the US, Canada and points beyond. The exhibitors represent the leading organizations and commercial companies who provide products and services to today's genealogists and family historians. WHAT’S NEW IN 2010? 1. Thursday Evening Registration. Many of our attendees requested that they be allowed to pick up the syllabus and other registration materials on Thursday evening. We listened, and in 2010 we will have a Jamboree check-in period on Thursday evening. Thursday night's check-in will be for pre-registered attendees only, and no walk-in registrations will be processed until Friday at noon. 2. More Seats. In response to last year's post-conference satisfaction survey, we are expanding our seating capacity by adding a pavilion that will be situated behind the Convention Center, adjacent to the lawn. The pavilion will hold 300 seats, will be fully air conditioned,Download it now with wireless internet access. Jamboree will take over the Marriott Hotel as well as the Convention Center and hold sessions in both buildings as well as the pavilion.3. Mini-courses. We will be running a track of hands-on computer lab workshops throughout the weekend. About 20 people per course will bring their laptops and go through hands-on workshops on using Excel, Word, blogging software, Skype, Google Earth, etc. These mini-courses are open only to paid Jamboree registrants. We will have a special mini-course registration that will be available online only and will open on May 1. 4. JamboFREE sessions will ensure that in these economically challenging times, expense will not be a barrier to learning. Several concurrent sessions, each lasting three hours, include a Genealogy Librarian's boot camp, a repeat of last year's highly popular Kids' Family History Camp, and beginner and advanced beginner genealogy sessions. Registration is required to attend the JamboFREE sessions on Friday morning. 5. The "Genealogy World" round table discussion has been expanded to three hours and moved to Friday morning. The session affords an excellent opportunity to network, to explore research tactics for specific geographic regions of the world, and to exchange tips and techniques on an informal basis. A complete list of round table discussion topics will be announced at a later date. There is no charge to attend the Genealogy World session, but registration is required. 6. Ancestry Scanning. Ancestry will be bringing four high-speed scanners and scheduling free, 15-minute scanning sessions. Ancestry has provided this service at other conferences, and we are thrilled that they will be be scanning documents and photos for Jamboree attendees. Read all of the details here. 7. Jamboree's trademark Blogger Summit will be presented in two sessions. The first session is designed for beginning bloggers. It will take attendees from zero to blogging in just sixty minutes! The second segment will help take your blogging to a higher level. Learn how to market your blog to reach a larger audience, how to make your blog more appealing and visually interesting, and avoid copyright issues.
This year's list of speakers includes recognized experts in genealogical techniques, technology, and products and services to support today's genealogists. We are honored to have excellent special presentations planned for our banquets and breakfasts: Saturday "Effective Society Management" Breakfast - DearMYRTLE. Jamboree traditionally devotes Saturday's breakfast session to an Effective Society Management event. This year, we are taking advantage of technology to offer the session to genealogical society leaders and members throughout the US and Canada. Log on from the comfort of your own home or from your genealogical society meeting's site and learn how to bring lecturers to your society at a fraction of the usual cost. Popular genealogy speaker, podcaster and blogger, DearMYRTLE, will demonstrate how to use GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar to bring top-notch speakers to your society at an affordable cost. While MYRT is addressing the room full of in-person attendees, hundreds of other participants can log on to GoToWebinar to watch and hear her presentation. Learn how non-profit societies can subscribe to GoToWebinar for less than $100 a year. Saturday "FamilySearch 2010 and Beyond" Breakfast - David E. Rencher, AG, CG, FUGA, FIGRS. FamilySearch is the world's largest genealogical resource. Patrons have grown to live its mantra to acquire, preserve, and provide access to more genealgoical records more quickly and more economically. The most common question patrons ask is "What's New with FamilySearch?" This session will address what FamilySearch has been doing, describe what's new, and take a sneak peek into the foreseeable future. Saturday Night Dinner - "The Search for Michelle Obama's Roots" - Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak. Megan shares how and why she researched the First Lady's ancestry and what she discovered along the way. The talk highlights Mrs. Obama's multicultural, seriously Southern (11 states) and Great Migration heritage, including the story of Dolphus T. Shields and his mother, Melvina McGruder. Sunday Breakfast - "Walk Through California History." Breakfast guests will mingle with a number of characters from California's rich pioneer past. You just never know who is going to show up and what stories they will have to share. If you enjoyed last year's "Mourning" presentation, you'll know you're in for an interesting time. Sunday Breakfast - "Presidential Genealogies" - Christopher Child and Rhonda McClure, New England Historic Genealogical Society. This talk will discuss recent interesting discoveries, including the ancestry of President Barak Obama and others. Chris and Rhonda will discuss the process of researching presidential genealogy and review some of the advantages and disadvantages of 20th century research. They will also address the benefit of having a team of collaborators, at NEHGS and online, helping speed the research along. EXHIBITORS The Exhibit Hall is FREE on Sunday! On the exhibit floor you will find the most important organizations, companies and societies to help with your research. Review the map and list in the Pink Sheets and locate the vendors that are on your don't-miss list. This list, too, is subject to revision.
Pre-registration is closed, but walk-ins are welcome. Walk-in registration will open at 12:00 noon on Friday in the Convention Center. Cost is $120 for the three-day weekend. Friday-only and Sunday-only tickets are $65 each. Saturday-only costs $70. The Marriott has designated special room rates for Jamboree attendees.
